Yes, your search for books on executioners is over! Executioner: Pierrepoint is the thoughtful – and increasingly scarce – memoir of Britain’s ‘Official Executioner’ for many years, following on from his father and uncle. Albert Pierrepoint carried out over 400 executions, half of them Nazi war criminals such as William Joyce (“Lord Haw-Haw”), which was more than any other executioner, and he travelled extensively abroad teaching his methods.

The fruit of his experience is the conclusion that capital punishment achieves nothing except revenge, and acts not at all as a deterrent.

Hardback in brown, ‘leathered‘ boards, Rare First Edition, pp211 + 11 plates.

This copy is in Very Good condition (very slightly bumped at the front top edge; small marks to fore-edges, also to a couple of pages; three other pages have various small dots which have the effect of light-grey paper shading – which I believe was a printing issue, but this in no way interferes with readability of the text); the dustjacket is also a Very Good example (price-clipped; spine sunned, rubbed and nicked at the top).

If you want to buy a rare book for your True Crime collection then this hardback First Edition would be a better long-term collectible item than the paperback version of Executioner: Pierrepoint.

Published by Harrap, 1974. First Edition. ISBN 0245520708.

Did you know?

A film has been made about the life of Albert Pierrepoint, starring Timothy Spall, entitled Pierrepoint: The Last Hangman. Incidentally, that title is a misnomer, as Pierrepoint was by no means the last hangman – in Britain or anywhere else. The last people to be hung in Britain were Gwynne Evans, and his accomplice Peter Allen, simultaneously at 8.00 am, 13 August 1964, eight years after Albert Pierrepoint resigned.

Pierrepoint – the UK Edition

Albert Pierrepoint was, however, the last in a long line of Pierrepoints to be an Executioner – although never the ‘Official Executioner’, a title which did not exist.

This book should interest anyone looking to buy a book online about the Abolition of  Capital Punishment, the Death Penalty Debate, State Executions and Executioners, Hangmen, and True Crime.
