A classic children’s story, first published in 1930 (as Patapoufs et Filifers). This is the paperback edition, published by Puffin Books, pp106.
Strangely enough, the fat, friendly Patapoufs (Fattypuffs) have subsequently been interpreted as representing the gourmet French, while the thin, somewhat cantankerous Filifers (Thinifers) could be likened to the militaristic Germans of that era. Based on this predication, the invasion of France was anticipated by André Maurois in 1930 – parallelling the disputed island of Fattyfer (or Thinipuff, depending on whose side you’re on) with Alsace-Lorraine.
Not only this, but the subsequent formation of the United States of the Underground may also be considered as the anticipation of the European Union! What a genius André Maurois was… if this were true.
