A Victorian Photograph Album containing 29 Celebrity Cartes de Visites

This Photo Album was produced by D. Appleton & Co. in New York around 1861 (undated) and contains images, or cartes de visites of royals, politicians, literary and religious figures of the period.

Among them are H.R.H. The Prince of Wales, The Queen & Prince Consort, Princess Alice, Garibaldi, Pope Pio Nono (Pope Pius IX, 1792-1878), Florence Nightingale, Charles Longley (future Archbishop of Canterbury), Lord Derby, Benjamin Disraeli, (Colin Campbell) Lord Clyde, Sir John Herschel, Charles Dickens, Charles Spurgeon, Thomas Hughes, Napoleon III, Ella Sophia Forster. These cartes have been identifed from the previous owner’s handwritten notation beneath each image, or imprinted on the carte itself. Thirteen portraits remain unidentified.

Each of the images measures approximately 3 ½” x 2” displayed within arched windows on each of 29 pages.

This is a nice leather bound album, with two integral brass clasps, measuring 155mm x 120mm. All page edges gilt.

One of the clasps is lifting from its mounting, but remains held in place by its pin. The binding is rubbed at corners and edges, and although internally the card pages are foxed, with closed tears to two pages, all pictures are clean and intact, generally very smart as a nice collectible item.
